Hey all,
I am no doubt aware that you get this question alot but im going to ask anyway. How easy is it to tell the sex and age of snakes. I have asked people before but dont get an answer I quite understand. So if anyone can give me an answer that a simple person like me understands then that would be great. Thanks in advance for any answers I receive. Happy new year all. Hope you enjoy your evening and hope 2011 is as good as 2010 was. xxx

I'm afraid its too difficult to pin point an age of a snake, too many things will effect the growth of a snake, temperature, space, size of a food item and how often the snake if fed will effect its growth rate.

as for sex, very few snakes you can tell externally, there are two ways to sex a snake but only one sure way.

one way can only be done with young snakes and that is to pop, its a method that should be done by someone who knows what they are doing, it involves basically pushing the genitals out of the cloaca, in a male it will be very obvious, however it is not a sure way as sometimes if incorrect amount of pressure is used then a males genitals may not show and therefore be passed off as female.

the other method of sexing is probing, and this must only be done by experienced probers, as if done wrong could be detrimental to the snakes health. Its done by using a snake probe, which is like a small metal rod, its lubed up and then inserted into the snakes cloaca, to either side towards to tail, depending on how far in the probe will go will determine the snakes sex, varies from species to species, but it will generally go in twice as far or more if i is male compared to female.
