Got this sexy boy from the ever lovely J. about 12 months or so ago now. He's a typical royal, as calm as you like but a complete bugger when it comes to feeding. I think I've only managed to get 5 feeds in him since I had him. J used to use him in his show and I honestly think Nyoka misses the travelling and handling he used to receive. He's 8 I believe (although I'm sure j will correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyway....pics.

Run away.......

Hope you like

Thanks Tilly. We have tried everything. Taking him for a drive, scenting the food, offering it boiling hot, dripping wet, braining ( :puke: never doing that again), different viv etc and no joy.

The last time we managed to get him to eat was a nightmare of a day. He had a retained eye cap and I spent all day faffing about to remove it, which involved lots of handling, bathing and general disturbance. I had already got the rat out before I noticed the problem and was 100% sure he wouldn't be interested.....it was gone within 5 minutes  . That was December and not a thing since!! :fight: :fight:

Awhh! He's gorgeous, I love the really dark colours! :D

Eww braining! I tried to attempt braining but ended up being sick myself, LOL! So instead I just leave it in there over night, and usually end up taking it out in the morning :puke:

Do you know how much he weighs? Males don't really eat as much as females anyway, as they're smaller. I'd try, what you said, about giving smaller foods, more often - sounds nicer than braining...

He is a sexy beast isn't he?

When I got him he was just over 1200g, he's now down to 1080g :(

The braining was hideous. I couldn't get through the skull at first so Mark came up with the brilliant idea of using a hammer.......need I say more? Took me over an hour to clean the kitchen :puke:

He's lovely :thumb:

I used to have a pair of these about 10 years ago, great snakes even if they can be fussy feeders.

Nyoka is the complete opposite to lucifer Shaz. Even tiddle-up adores him.

Mice with an egg and cat food dip? Interesting..... :hmm:

Well, moving the little man back downstairs today. He's been in the back bedroom for the last few months in the hope that he would start eating again as it's quieter upstairs.

No such luck. :?

Thanks :D I have indeed tried him on £2.80 a pop gerbils....he left that as well! :fight: You name it, I've tried it. Smaller rats, large mice, medium mice, gerbils, braining, scenting, begging, pleading.....all in vain.

Taken some pics of him now he's downstairs again. Will get them loaded in a minute.

You tried a chick? only pennies (literally) to buy and usually get royals feeding.

Our royal didn't eat for 9 months when first got her, we started her on chicks, she'd eat 2 every time except when in moult. Then decided to try something new so offered one chick which she took and straight after offered a small rat which she also took, probably thinking it was another chick! and about 4 month later she was eating nothing but rats and mice :D odd chick here and there if she got bored or remembered :P

Now lives with Tigs though, but i haven't heard from him since he bought her :hmm:

No I've not tried chicks yet Sarah, the main reason being I can't get them here :?

I am reliant on one, very overpriced, shop for all my snake food. The only reason they had gerbils in was because they had a non feeding royal in the shop.

I wonder if it would be worth a trip over to Bristol :hmm:

Stupid question time, do the chicks come in different sizes?

Not that i'm aware of, they're just hatchlings, not sure if you can get bigger ones, i think the next size up bird wise is quails.

Only problem with chicks is they aren't as good as rats because they hardly have any bone and therefore rubbish calcium wise, a snake whos been raised on chicks will never grow to full size. They can also become addictive and why a lot of people steer away from them as some snakes won't take rats after having a chick. But if the snakes adult anyway i don't really see a problem with having lower calcium intake unless its producing eggs.

Cheers for the info Sarah, shall have to see if I can get hold of some. It would just be nice to get the mardy sod eating normally, as opposed to once every 6 months.
